Today we’re going to answer your question: Should I pay for an upgrade to impact resistant shingles? To answer the question I would ask you a question. What are your goals that would kind of prompt you to think about doing that?
There are really two benefits that you get by putting an impact resistant shingles on your house. Well, three okay? An obvious first benefit that you’re going to get is hopefully no future damage from a hail storm. But then there are a couple of secondary benefits to you.
One is depending on who your insurance company is you could get a pretty substantial discount on your insurance rates if you have an impact resistant shingles on your house.
Some insurance companies give as high as a 28% discount to homeowners who have an IR shingle. A class four IR shingle on their house. So if your”re, with one of those insurance companies that could really work out well for you if you put a class four IR shingle on your house.
But then another benefit that people don’t often times think about because they’re usually really focused on their savings on their insurance money is that if there’s another hail storm and you don’t get any damage you just saved yourself having to pay another deductible payment for a re-roof job that could work out to be a pretty substantial amount for you because.
- Insurance companies are changing deductible amounts and so a lot of people have deductibles that are much higher than what used to be standard even just a couple of years ago.
- If your whole goal is to get that discount on your insurance premiums then you’re gonna need to call your insurance company first and ask them do they give a discount and how much is the discount that they give.
Some insurance companies give a discount but it’s so small it’s not even really worth the cost to upgrade to the IR shingle so be sure to do your homework on that first. There is a little word of warning that I would give people though about going with roofers who are offering to give you free upgrades to an impact resistant shingle.
The first warning is what product are they giving you this free upgrade to? There are some impact resistant shingles out there that are just they’re not even they’re not worth it and so if your goal is to prevent future claims for hail damage these products may not actually serve that purpose so you may end up having claims in the future again anyway.
If your goal is just to get the premium discounts from your insurance company and you don’t care about whether or not you prevent any future claims, then it really doesn’t matter what you put up there as long as it’s a class-4 shingle you’re going to get that discount.
But if you’re trying to avoid future claims really do your homework on the types of roofing materials that there are out there. The second word of warning is if you’re getting this free upgrade to an impact resistant shingles make sure you’re actually getting an impact resistant shingle.
I don’t know how many times we’ve talked to homeowners who said yeah the last guy gave me a or the last guy put an impact resistant shingle on there maybe they paid for an upgrade or maybe they got the free upgrade and then when we do the inspection we find out there is no impact resistant shingles on the roof.
So they got scammed. So remember if somebody’s offering you a free upgrade to an impact resistant shingles If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I hope that answers your questions about whether or not you should consider an upgrade to an impact resistant shingle.
